Janet A. Reifert

Our Mom, Janet A. Reifert, passed away on December 2, 2022, of old age, with her children by her side. She was born on April 19, 1928, in Cleveland, Ohio to Albert A. Stein and Laura (Herner) Stein. Janet was raised in Marion, Ohio and moved to Toledo upon high school graduation in 1947 to attend the Toledo Hospital School of Nursing. She was a member of the 1950 graduating class. There, she met her husband, Robert J. Reifert, of Toledo, Ohio. She was his nurse while he was hospitalized. He told her she had nice legs (which she did) and the rest is history. They were married on August 18, 1951, at Gesu Church in Toledo, Ohio. Janet and her husband enjoyed traveling, antiquing and were long-time members of Highland Meadows Golf Club. They were actively involved in all aspects of their children’s lives, and she will be deeply missed. Janet absolutely loved being a nurse and worked many jobs during her 38-year career, most notably she worked nights in the recovery room – post open-heart surgery at the Toledo Hospital. After retirement from W.W. Knight Family Practice Center at Toledo Hospital and the passing of her husband, Robert, Jan enjoyed traveling to visit her children, grandchildren, and to see childhood and nursing school lifelong friends. She enjoyed returning to her Lutheran faith and was very active at Hope Lutheran Church. She could often be found in the church kitchen on Tuesdays making soup and salad for their “Lunch With Luther” bible study. She also stayed busy giving her time volunteering at the Toledo Hospital and the Toledo Museum of Art. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren where she was a very interactive and hands-on grandma. Janet is preceded in death by her parents, brother William H. Stein, and husband Robert. She is survived by her children Robert, Fritz (Lisa), Carol (Jeff) White, and Laurie (Paul) Syring. Also surviving are 9 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Our Mom was a force for good in our family, our hero, a caregiver known for her exuberance, and vivaciousness. She is also known for her love of red, Cheetah print, and butterflies. “I’ve had a wonderful life” she often said. She will be missed and although we are heartbroken, we take comfort in knowing she is at peace. We would specifically like to thank Otterbein Sunset House where she resided the past 10 years, St. Anne’s Hospital nursing staff, and Dr. Zainulabedin Waqar and ProMedica Ebeid Hospice. Friends and family are invited to visit on Saturday, May 27, 2023, from 9:00am - 10:00am at Hope Lutheran Church, 2201 Secor Rd. where a Celebration of Life will begin at 10:00am. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery and a luncheon at Hope Lutheran Church at 12:00pm. Donations can be made to Otterbein Sunset House, the Alzheimer’s Association, or ProMedica Ebeid Hospice.
