Noted Artist and Art Educator, who lived in Pemberville, Ohio, Carrol Lee H. Rice passed away on May 19, 2021 in the care of nurses at Otterbein of Portage. She was born March 31, 1929 in Toledo, Ohio to Ester R. Keiser and Waldo Glenn Hefty. Deceased brothers were Ted W. and Terry Richard Smith. Carrol was the widow of Richard S. Rice (deceased) whom she met at the University of Toledo during her college years and married a few years after graduation. She attended DeVilbiss High School and graduated from the University of Toledo in 1951. Professionally, she was an outstanding Art Teacher having taught at Start and Bowsher High Schools and several Elementary schools. She received her Master of Fine Arts Degree from Bowling Green State University in 1967. Carrol had numerous memberships including: Chi Omega National Sorority (University of Toledo), The Athena Art Society, Spectrum Art, Toledo Museum of Art, Toledo Botanical Gardens, The Toledo Artist Club and Glass City Doll Collectors. She was a member of Ashland Baptist Church, Toledo, Ohio (where she was baptized) and for years sang in the Junior and Senior Choirs, and also was a member of Tri C's, a church youth group. She was a friend of the First Unitarian Church, Toledo, Ohio. Special thanks are given to Diana Schreiner who helped care for Carrol, along with the wellness nurses at Otterbein in her last years. Memorial contributions may be given to Ashland Church and the First Unitarian Church, The Athena Art Society or the Toledo Museum of Art or donor's choice. Friends are invited to visit on Tuesday May 25, 2021 from 10:00am-12:00pm in the Ansberg-West Funeral Home, 3000 W. Carrol was the recipient of numerous Art Awards over the years, a very creative person, who led a unique life - one who will be long remembered. In addition, her paintings were exhibited at the Collector's Corner TMA, Gallery North, American Gallery, Spectrum and Fenwick Galleries and Gallery Loft at Lourdes College. Favorite subjects of her art were: abstract designs, portraits, still life and countless others. The artist had many other interests in music and dance - she was a volunteer usher for Symphonies and Operas at the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle and she attended the Marie Bollinger Vogt School of Dance, where she studied ballet.
