Elizabeth J. "Betty" Welch

August 12, 1924 - March 7, 2022

Elizabeth Jane Welch, 97, died peacefully in her home in Toledo on March 7, 2022, surrounded by her loving family. Betty was born in Toledo, the eldest of three girls born to Emil and Ramona Carstensen. She attended St. Agnes grade school, St. Ursula Academy, and Mary Manse College, where she received a degree in teaching. Later in life, she received a Master’s degree in Guidance Counseling from the University of Toledo. Two weeks after graduation from Mary Manse, Betty married her childhood sweetheart, Carl J. Welch Jr., shortly after he returned from WWII. They were married for 57 years until “Greenie’s” death in 2003. Betty loved to read, dance, sing and travel, and she attended Catholic mass daily for much of her adult life. She taught science and spelling at St. Pius X, gave music lessons at St. Ursula Academy, and diligently studied and debated philosophy and theology. She was founder of a monthly bridge game that continued for 70 years. Betty was preceded in death by her sister Pat Bercher, and is survived by her sister, Sister Margaret Anne “Aunt Mary”, both of Toledo. She is survived by six children, 14 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, plus one on the way. Surviving children include Carla Bradshaw of Cincinnati, Dee Stofko (Ed) of Dallas, Terry Wilson (Gerry) of Toledo, Carl E. Welch of Toledo, Joe Welch (Mary) of Sarasota, FL, and Andra Murrell (Charlie) of Toledo. Betty loved God and her family, and she took a special interest in each of their daily lives. She hosted Monday night dinner and euchre for the “in-towners” and an annual Christmas celebration at her home for the whole crew. Visitation will begin at 9:00AM and will be followed a funeral mass held at 10:00 am at St. Pius X Catholic Church on Friday, March 11, 2022 and followed by a burial at the Calvery Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St Pius X Church, Covenant House or Doctor’s Without Borders. Professional arrangements have been entrusted to the Ansberg-West Funeral Directors, 419-472-7633. To send her family online condolences, please visit www.ansberg-west.com.
