Eugene J. Sartor

August 8, 1929 - March 1, 2014

Eugene “Gene” J. Sartor passed away peacefully on March 1, 2014. He was born in Toledo on August 8, 1929 to Eugene J. Sartor, Sr. and Juliana Faith Hope. He was a Central Catholic High School graduate, class of 1947. He joined the USMC Reserves in 1948 and was assigned to Baker Co., 7th Marines for active duty in August of 1950. He was proud to be a member of the Marines who participated in the historic Chosin Reservoir Battle in Korea. After completing studies at the Radio Electronics School in Detroit, Gene was a broadcast engineer for television stations in Toledo, Cleveland and Youngstown. Gene was a 4th Degree member and served as navigator of the Bishop Hoffman K of C Assembly 807; a member of the West Toledo K of C Council 3122, where he served in many positions including two terms as Grand Knight; he particularly valued his membership in The Chosin Few. He was a charter member of the Korean War Veterans Association Northwest Ohio Chapter 131, and a member of the VFW. Gene was also a member of Blessed Sacrament Church. Gene is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rita Maria Maier; 9 children: Anita (Lee) Sitler, Denise (Keith) Brigode, Daniel (Margaret) Sartor, Carl (Patti) Sartor, Michael (Linda) Sartor, LaDonna (David) Gaydosh, Steven (Birgit) Sartor, Tony and Terry Sartor; grandchildren: Ericka (Greg) Bierer, Andrea Sitler, Nicholas (Amanda) Brigode, Jessica Sartor, Robert (Jennifer) Sitler, Andrew (Catherine) Gaydosh, Dawn (Travis) Hallock, Christopher (Crystal) Gaydosh, Benedikt Sartor, Katherine (Nathan) Scott, William (Colleen Kauth) Brigode, Leann (Geoff Davis) Sitler, Elizabeth (Christopher) Foeckler, Mary (Peter Torrey) Gaydosh, Anthony Sartor, James Sartor, Charles (Samatha Hayes) Brigode, Dennis Sartor, Matthew Gaydosh, Bernadette Sartor, Dustin Sartor, Felicia Sartor, Melanie Sartor, Matthew Sartor, Aaron Sartor, Melinda Sartor, Daniel Sartor, Patrick Sartor. He was “Opa” to 10 great-grandchildren and also survived by brothers, Joseph Sartor, William (Esther) Sartor, Frank (Angela ) Sartor, Charles Sartor and sister, Juliana Morin. Gene was devoted to his Catholic Faith, his family and his brother Knights of Columbus and their activities. He loved it all! Friends are invited to visit from 2-8 p.m. Thursday, in the Ansberg-West Funeral Home, 3000 Sylvania Avenue, (between Secor and Douglas Roads), where the Knights of Columbus will recite the rosary at 7 p.m. Prayers will begin on Friday at 9:20 a.m. from the funeral home, followed by the funeral mass at 10 a.m., at Blessed Sacrament Church. Msgr. Michael J. Billian will officiate. Interment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery. Memorial contributions, if desired, may be made to Blessed Sacrament Parish or Central Catholic High School.
