August 19, 1923 - August 17, 2010
Jeanne C. Swindle, age 86, lifelong resident of Toledo, died peacefully surrounded by her family, at Northwest Ohio Hospice on August 17, 2010. Jeanne was born on August 19, 1923 to Laura Louise Hinds Robinson and J.C. Robinson. Living with close extended family during the Depression, Jeanne and her siblings learned the stories of their family from generations before. This fueled a lifelong interest in family history which they passed on. Jeanne adored her family and friends. She graduated from Scott High School in 1941, and entered the Toledo Hospital School of Nursing. After World War II began, Jeanne joined the Cadet Nursing Corps and finished her nursing education while serving as a nurse with wounded soldiers. She was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army and served at Kennedy General Hospital in Memphis, TN. She met Earl Swindle, a United States Navy Chief Petty Officer in Memphis, and they were married on April 27, 1946, at Epworth United Methodist Church in Toledo. Earl and Jeanne returned to Toledo following the end of the war and raised their four children. She continued her nursing career at Toledo Hospital, the University of Toledo and as the Federal Health nurse at the Federal Building in downtown Toledo, retiring in 1987. She offered her warm heart and compassionate ear to countless patients, friends and family. Jeanne made friends wherever she went and had the gift of keeping them. She enjoyed her time with Scott High School Alumni, the Epworth macular degeneration group, Toledo Hospital Nurses, veteran's groups, and Eastern Star Areme Club. She had a passion for her family, children, genealogy, love of country, and nursing. She enjoyed reading the books provided by the Outreach Librarians and the visits with the RSVP retired police group. She supported women as veterans and participated in the University of Toledo Veterans History Project and several World War II memorial projects. She truly was one of the “Greatest Generation''. She is survived by her four children, Cynthia (Clyde) Sweet, Barbara (Eldon) Sheffer, Thomas (Nancy) Swindel, and Catherine (Emliss) Ricks, eight grandchildren, Ben, Devon, Laura, Colin, Melissa, Matthew, Eric and Clara and two great grandsons. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Earl, her sister, Wink Salow, and her brother Chuck Robinson. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 21st at 11:00 AM at Epworth United Methodist Church, 3077 Valleyview Drive at Central, with visitation at the church between 10:00 and 11:00. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to the Youth Ministries at Epworth United Methodist Church or Semper Fi Wounded Warriors.
