Joanne E. Tooman Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Tooman Joanne E. Joanne Tooman, 79, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2014 surrounded by her family at the Goerlich Center in Sylvania. She was born Joan Elizabeth Mayers on March 27, 1935, to Margaret (Christman) and Ernest Mayers. She was preceded in death by her parents and grandson Kyle Ciralsky. Joanne graduated from St. Agnes grade school and St. Ursula Academy. As a teenager she met and was courted by a handsome young man, Chuck Tooman, who won her heart, swept her off her feet and married her at the tender age of 19. Their young romance blossomed into 59 years of wedded happiness. Their unyielding commitment and dedication to each other and their family was admired and envied by many. They thrived on simple pleasures and were content to enjoy their time together with family and friends. Joanne was best known for her red hair and beautiful smile, which she shared with everyone – always. Kindhearted, friendly, giving, trusting and charitable, she was a dedicated wife and mother, and a great friend. Perhaps her most endearing quality was being a wonderful grandmother. She couldn’t wait to get down on the floor with the kids to play games and share in their exuberance, laughter and innocent love of life. Trips to Cedar Point, backyard Easter egg hunts, special Halloween treats and Christmas Eve entertaining were traditions that were extra special to her, because they were extra special to her children and grandkids with whom she shared them. She kept a comfortable home that was welcoming and open to all. Sunday dinners and backyard cookouts with family and friends made her happy. She looked forward to and treasured vacations to Florida and time at the beach. Later, when the kids were grown, she and Chuck vacationed in other parts of the country and enjoyed cruises. She was a good sport because she had to be…she was surrounded by sports fans. She shared many seasons with Chuck as a University of Toledo football and basketball season ticket holder. Clearly she enjoyed the experience more than the competition as she never really fully understood the fine points of the games, such as who was on offense or defense! Joanne worked for many years as a bookkeeper for the Gladieux Corporation. She enjoyed reading and playing cards with her group of friends, loved having colorful flowers and a garden in her yard, couldn’t pass up a good fashion sale, and for many years was an active participant along with Chuck in the Blessed Sacrament seniors group. She also was a member of the Salesian Society. With her passing, we will miss how she brightened the space around her with her glowing smile, eternal optimism and simple approach to making the best of every day. Our world is a better place because of her, and those who knew and loved her will always hold her memory dear. Joanne will forever be cherished and remembered by her husband Chuck, son Mark (Beth) Tooman, and daughters Marilyn (Mick) Fortney and Linda Ciralsky. Her grandchildren who will miss her dearly include Brad (Kristin) Tooman, Erin (Nate) Strong, Tim (Samantha) Byram, Nicole (Aaron) Byram and Caitlin Ciralsky. Great grandchildren who will grow up to hear wonderful stories about their great-grandma include Logan and Sydney. She also is survived by her brothers Michael (Carole) Mayers and Steve (Laura) Mayers. Friends are invited to visit on Wednesday May 7, 2014 from 2:00-8:00pm in the Ansberg-West Funeral Home, 3000 W. Sylvania Ave. where a prayer service will begin at 7:00pm. The Mass of the Resurrection will begin on Thursday at 10:00am at Blessed Sacrament Church. Her interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery.
