John Henry Henninger

January 14, 1942 - August 28, 2014

John Henry Henninger, age 72, passed away unexpectedly late Thursday evening at St. Anne's Hospital. John was born January 14, 1942, in Toledo, Ohio, the son of John Henry Henninger (U.S. Army) and Margaret E. Henninger (O'Connor). John graduated from Woodward High School and immediately enlisted in the United States Navy where he proudly served from 1959-1963 aboard the USS Intrepid, "The Fighting I." His tour of duty took him on a Mediterranean cruise, which provided unforgettable memories. Following his honorable discharge he was employed with the Toledo Edison where he worked in full capacity as a linesman from 1967-1993. John was a fascinating man who enjoyed the simple things in life and had many interests and hobbies. He took great pride in his beautiful rose garden, keeping his lawn well manicured, and barbequing. He was a great cook, always searching for some new recipe. He was very knowledgeable in the history of the Civil War and could educate you with his wisdom. He enjoyed participating in historical lectures at Lourdes College in Sylvania, Ohio. One of his favorite joys was getting up early to start his day so he could meet up with his longtime friends for their daily early a.m. walks which were followed by mornings of long conversation over coffee. He also enjoyed his close travel to the Upper Peninsula in search of relaxation and the past. In the previous years he would travel down to Texas with his close furry companions, his pop-up, and camp on his daughter's property for the summer. He thoroughly enjoyed the hot Texas heat (so he said), and its rich history. He made many new friends on his visits; they still ask about him. He enjoyed these simple times with family, friends, BBQ, and of course, beer time. Thus, creating many great memories for all. John Henninger was a parishioner of St. Patrick's Historic Church, a devoted Christian, a man with deep integrity who believed in working hard and providing back to others. He is survived by is daughter, Wendy Henninger Harris (U.S. Navy), husband Gerald Harris and grandson, Cody Cheyenne Harris from Texas; his life long companion of 27 years, Mariella Ruffing, and her grandchildren, Amber and Zakary Aubry. The family will receive guests Tuesday, September 2, 2014, from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. at Ansberg-West Funeral Home, 3000 Sylvania Avenue.
