Mary E. Gerken left us to be with the Lord on July,27, 2011. Mary was born on August 29, 1920 to Nettie Mosher, WW1 army nurse veteran, in Des Moine Iowa. She died peacefully at The Glendale, her home of 7 years. Mary was an extraordinary woman who raised four remarkable children after the death of her husband George E. Gerken Jr. in 1958. Mary, always a scholar, was the Valedictorian of her class at Perrysburg HS, a graduate of the former MaryManse College, where she was a Vice-President at the time it closed. She also held 2 master's degrees from the Univ. of Toledo. Mary was a scientist and lifelong educator. One of her earliest jobs was as a Chemist for Sun Oil. She taught chemistry at Sylvania H.S and St. Ursula Academy. and biology to nursing students at Mary Manse. She worked for OSHA protecting workers and later developed and taught the Industrial Hygiene programs at M.C.O and the Univ. of Toledo. Between her many careers, she also managed to do basic education with the Onieda Indian Tribe in Bemidiji MN. Mary was a tireless volunteer to many organizations, participated in many citizen advocacy activities and spent countless hours working at the Ursuline Convent. She enjoyed her service as an Eucharist Minister at St. Pius X. Mary was preceded in death by her Husband George, her mother Nettie and granddaughter Kelly. She is survived by her children Cathy (David) McNeilly, George (Leslie) Gerken, Fran (Tom) Martone, and Pete (Polly) Gerken. Seventeen grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. .The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated 10:30 AM Monday, August 1st at St. Pius X Church where you may visit after 10 AM The family will receive friends from 2-7 PM Sunday, July 31in the Ansberg-West Funeral Home, 3000 Sylvania Avenue where recitation of the Rosary will begin at 3 PM. Any tributes may be made in the form of contributions to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
