Omogene "Genie" Waggoner

Omogene “Genie” Waggoner, age 89, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 17, 2022. She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on February 22, 1932 to Rose and Guy Hanway. She also lived in New York, West Virginia and Toledo. She graduated from Toledo Central Catholic High School in 1949. She married Melvin Waggoner who passed away in 1969. She earned a Bachelor of Education and Master of Education from The University of Toledo and was a member of Phi Delta Kappa professional education fraternity. She taught second grade at Qregon Starr Elementary School for thirty years. Many students kept in touch with her and inspired several to become teachers. She was elected in 1973 to a four year term on the Toledo Board of Education in her first and only election finishing second of seven candidates. She was a long time Republican precinct committee person and attended the 2012 GOP National Convention in Tampa, Florida as an alternate delegate. She was strong, independent, social, and feisty. She enjoyed cooking, baking, activities with the grandchildren and traveling the world. She was a member of Eastern Star and Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral. Surviving are sons Geoff Waggoner, Brian (Sue) Waggoner, Tim Waggoner, and Melvin (Cindy) Waggoner, daughter-in-law Lori Waggoner, 13 grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was also predeceased in death by son Matt Waggoner and daughter-in-law Kathy Waggoner. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. prior to a 2:00 p.m. service on Monday, January 24, 2022 at Ansberg-West Funeral Home,3000 W Sylvania, Toledo.
