February 9, 1921 - August 12, 2010
Paul “Papa” Nagy, 89, passed away Thursday, August 12, 2010, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. He was born February 9, 1921, to Paul and Rose (Lorencz) Nagy, both Hungarian immigrants. They settled in the Hungarian “Birmingham” neighborhood along with sisters, Rose, Mary, Lillian and brother, John; enjoying the local deli, reminiscing about the “old country” and dining on chicken paprika's, Hunkey turkey and the soon-to-be-famous, Packo's hot dogs. Paul attended St. Stephens Grade School and Macomber High School, excelling in both baseball and football. He was also known to be an excellent handball player as well as playing semi-pro football (Schmidts Beer) and fast pitch softball (Juhasz Meat Market and Dad's Root beer). Hiss athletic career culminated with his induction into the Birmingham Hall of Fame, in 2003. Paul was a feverishly working member of Local 55 of the Ironworkers, retiring after 43 years of service. He served for over 20 years on the Executive Board, as well as assisting in their apprentice program. A decorated World War II Veteran, Paul was actively involved in the campaigns at Normandy, Rhineland, Northern France, Ardennes and Central Europe. Paul always enjoyed his many camping trips with family and friends over the years, loved his rose garden and was an avid Notre Dame football fan. For those who knew Paul, he will forever be remembered for his love of family, endless words of encouragement and quick one liners'. He was an honorable and compassionate husband, father, and “PAPA”, who was loved by all and will be deeply missed. Paul was preceded in death by Marge “Mimi”, his loving wife of 55 years, along with sisters, Mary, Lillian and brother, John. They were blessed with six children who survive; Paul III, Carol Sue, Theresa (Pat) Bain, James, Mary (Tim) Gerken and Thomas; grandchildren, Christopher and Corey Hicks, Alan, Andrea and Ashley Bain, Andy Nagy and Chelsea Gerken. Paul is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Colin and Corey Heretick and Adrien Bain, along with several other caring relatives. Friends are invited to visit from 2-8 p.m. Monday, August 16, 2010, in the Ansberg-West Funeral Home, 3000 Sylvania Avenue. Prayers will begin at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, from the funeral home, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m., in St. Catherine of Siena Church, with Father Doug Garand officiating. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio or the donor's choice. The family would like to thank the staff at Lake Park (4th Floor) and Hospice of Northwest Ohio, for their loving care.
