October 29, 1930 - May 29, 2018
Sue M. Shew, 87, died peacefully on May 29, 2018 at her daughter Sarah’s home in Toledo, Ohio. Susie was born October 29, 1930 in Bloomington, Illinois, the daughter of The Rev. Dr. Harold Martin and Alice Shonkweiler Martin. She was preceded in death by her brother, The Rev. Dr. James P. Martin of Arlington Heights. After graduating from Maryville College in Tennessee, Susie married Johnny who was attending Princeton Theological Seminary. The family (including their newborn, Kathy) moved to Bloomington, Illinois where John, now ordained, served on the staff of Second Presbyterian Church with Susie’s father, “Doc” Martin. A second child, David, joined the family in Bloomington and the family moved to Grand Forks, North Dakota where Tim and Sarah were born and where John Shew served as the Pastor of First Presbyterian Church. Vital years at First Pres in Cedar Rapids, Iowa preceded the move to Toledo where Johnny was Senior Pastor at the Collingwood Presbyterian Church until he died in 1989. Many people who remember Susie applaud her vision for uniting and directing children’s singing voices, her efforts in helping form the Women’s Center and Women In Philanthropy at UT, her many musical and theatre ventures, and her voice as a conduit for bringing positive changes to families. Her vibrancy for life as well as her smile brought love and joy to all who knew her. In Toledo Susie was a Licensed Professional Counselor in private practice after she received her M.A. in Counseling from the University of Toledo. For 25 years she was a counselor in Toledo’s private Catholic schools, taught parenting and communication skills throughout metropolitan Toledo and loved showing off her expertise in hospitality by hosting those “famous” Shew parties. Susie is survived by her children, Kathy Shew-Felchle and Sarah Shew of Toledo, The Rev. David Shew and his wife The. Rev. Debbie Shew of Durango, CO and Tim Shew and his wife Jane Brockman of Hershey, PA. She adored her 7 grandchildren and contributed in so many visible and invisible ways to their upbringing. The Shews lived in Old Orchard, Toledo for more than 40 years. Family and friends were Susie’s passion and delight. Many will miss the way she always was able to fill any room with hospitality, humor and cheer. She was an excellent listener. The family wishes to thank all the caregivers during her final years, especially Parkcliffe Community and Ohio Living. Susie Shew’s Celebration of Life service with special music will be held in the sanctuary of Collingwood Presbyterian Church at 2:00 pm on Friday, June 22, 2018, Julian A. Davies, officiant. A reception will follow. Arrangements entrusted to the Ansberg-West Funeral Directors, 419-472-7633. To send her family online condolences, please visit www.ansberg-west.com.
