September 15, 1917 - April 8, 2010
Virginia S. Potter, 92, passed away on April 8, 2010. She was born September 15, 1917, in New Orleans, LA, the only child of Elizabeth (Everett) and Percy Roberts. Virginia graduated, at the age of 16, from Scott High School, in 1933. She married her high school sweetheart, Robert C. Potter, in 1936 and he preceded her in death in 2002. Virginia attended Stautzenberger College for one year and then began her working career in the offices at Hickock Oil Co. and later at Willys-Overland. She left her work to have their first child and remained a full-time homemaker until 1957. At that time she became the supervisor of the patients and nurses' libraries, at the Toledo State Hospital, retiring in 1977. Virginia played the piano throughout her life, until her 50's, when she switched to the electric organ. Her children appreciated the legacy of listening to the great music of the 1930's, 40's and 50's. She was also an active member of the First Baptist Church of Greater Toledo. Virginia's primary focus was her family; first, 3 children, then 11 grandchildren and finally, 23 great-grandchildren. In addition to many family events, Virginia and Robert enjoyed trips to Europe, Canada, Mexico and many states in the U.S. Those left to miss her dignified, loving, and intelligent personality in their lives are: her children, Joyce (Steve) Shawaker, Janet (Wayne) Widner and David (Diana) Potter; grandchildren, Scott (Rhonda) Shawaker, Peter (Elizabeth) Shawaker, Andrew (Samantha) Shawaker, Robert (Amy) Widner, Eric Widner, Alan (Chris) Widner, Peggy (Erik) Bergmann, David (Yvonne) Potter, Cara (Jeff) Barlow, Chris (Kurt) Raymond and Gina (Aaron) Clark; 23 great-grandchildren and her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John and Phyllis Potter. Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon, Tuesday, in the Ansberg-West Funeral Home, 3000 Sylvania Avenue, where friends may visit after 10 a.m. Dr. David Andersen will officiate. Interment will be in Toledo Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Greater Toledo, 6520 Pilliod Road, Holland, OH, 43528 or Hospice of Northwest Ohio, 30000 East River Road, Perrysburg, OH, 43551.
