John James Myers

John James Myers, age 94, died peacefully at Kingston Sylvania Memory Care on February 12, 2024, after a short stay of a few months with dementia. John was born April 29, 1929, the son of parents Alta and Harvey Myers of Hudson, Michigan where he spent his childhood years. John was a multi-sport athlete at the local school where he met his first wife, Patricia (Tomer) Myers, the mother of his four children. They enjoyed a marriage of 39 years until she died at the early age of 57 due to ovarian cancer. John was the last surviving sibling of eldest brother, Donald; sister, Bertine; and younger brother, Harold. John Myers joined the U.S. Naval Reserve while in high school and served at the rank of Seaman until he started his family at the age of 20. He worked for the A&P Tea Company for 25 years, proudly becoming Produce Department Manager after moving the family from their hometown of Hudson to a few other small towns before ending up in Toledo, OH. John and family attended First Congregational Church where he participated in many church activities, one being accompanying the youth group to Puerto. He was a Boy Scout Leader and chaperoned two trips to the Philmont camp in New Mexico. He was leader for several years at the Elks Club in Toledo and helped digitalize ancestry information for the Toledo Public Library. As an affordable vacation, John and his young family enjoyed tent camping, traveling to a number of places, mostly in the Midwest, but also as far as the Smoky Mountains and the east coast. Later as an empty nest couple, John and Patricia bought a trailer and spent weekends at Sunny’s Campground in Wauseon, OH as well as a trip out west. They also enjoyed snow skiing at places in Michigan as well as a weeklong ski trip to the Austrian Alps near Innsbruck Austria shortly before Patricia passed away. John then married widower Virginia (Vroman) Myers and together they shared travels to the local Amish country as well as a number of senior events and bus trips for widows/widowers. Virginia died in the fall of 2020 during the pandemic due to dementia, after they had enjoyed 26 years of marriage. John, his children and their offspring enjoyed large family get togethers, a big extended annual family Christmas and, for almost 15 years, an annual spring camping trip with as many as 40 gathering together for those events. John was always friendly and outgoing with a ready laugh, able to see the humor during any conversation. He enjoyed talking with any and everyone. His family was proud of him and all his accomplishments. John is survived by his four children who remained very close and supportive of their father during his final years alone, Deborah (Alan) Fritz of Toledo, OH, Michael (Cheryl) Myers of Denver, CO, Julie (Denny) Heim of Tega Cay, SC, and Constance Fleury of Toledo. They gave him 8 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren to enjoy. As the loving patriarch, family man, and friend to many, he will be greatly missed. Family and friends are welcome to visit at Ansberg-West Funeral Home, 3000 Sylvania Ave., from 9:30am – 10:30am on Saturday, February 17, 2024, where a memorial service will begin at 10:30am. John enjoyed the support of Hospice of Northwest Ohio at his life’s end, as well as both of his wives. Contributions to that organization would be welcomed by the family.
