Richard "Rick" LaPlante

Richard “Rick” LaPlante, 75, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2026, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Toledo, Ohio, on March 3, 1951, to the late Donald and Erma (Spring) LaPlante. Rick lived a life defined by hard work, laughter, and a love for the outdoors. He graduated from Macomber Vocational School in 1969 and went on to build a long career as an electrician, lending his skills and strong work ethic to Vollmar's Amusement Park, Johns Manville, Owens-Illinois, and Diversified Capping. Rick was happiest near the water—whether fishing, swimming, water skiing, or camping on the islands along the Maumee River. Those camping trips became the backdrop for countless stories, laughter, and cherished memories shared with family and friends around campfires late into the night. A true tinkerer at heart, Rick could often be found in his garage working on one project or another. If something was broken, chances were Rick could fix it—usually with a little creativity and a few colorful jokes along the way. His quick wit and playful sense of humor kept those around him smiling, and he never missed an opportunity to make someone laugh. Rick shared an extraordinary bond with his sister, Louise “Lou” Day, whose love, companionship, and unwavering presence were among the greatest gifts of his life. Together, they spent countless hours talking, laughing, supporting one another, and creating memories that will be cherished for generations. Their relationship was built on deep affection, trust, and a lifelong friendship that brought comfort and joy through every season of life. The family is especially grateful for the devotion, kindness, and love Lou so generously shared, and for the treasured connection that meant so much to them both. Rick is survived by his children, Angela (Lincoln) LaPlante-Kynard, Adam LaPlante, and Amanda (Shammy) LaPlante; grandchildren, Ashley (Garrett), Gabriel (Josie), Caleb, Emily, Zara, Jordan, and Morgan; great-grandson, Grayson; brothers, Donald LaPlante Jr., Gerald (Patricia) LaPlante, and John (Judy) LaPlante; sisters, Sally (William) Newhouse and Louise Day; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. Rick will be remembered for his kind heart, hardworking spirit, love of family, and the many memories made along the water's edge and around campground fires. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. A celebration of Rick's life will be held at a later date. Details will be shared with family and friends once arrangements have been finalized.
